Vinyl & CD Package Design – Album Artwork & Graphic Design

hen creating album artwork design, the most important thing is capturing the essence of the music while designing something that captures any viewer’s attention immediately. For the 17-piece soul/funk/hip hop collective orchestra from Victoria, BC that is The Leg-Up Program, the concept was simple; design an album cover that was as enticing as the vintage movie posters that we grew up with and love. Think original Star Wars, Blade Runner, and Hook to name a few. These were all classic posters that feature both characters and scenes from the movies. I DESIGN STUFF sought to tap into this vintage style for the album art & design.

o do this, I DESIGN STUFF created personas for each band member as if they characters in a Leg-Up Program movie. For the hand-crafted, water-colour-style artwork, we enlisted the help of Canadian modern artist and mural painter, Dominic Laporte of Laporte Brothers. We featured the players with their instruments to give the impression that the contents of the package were of a musical nature and designed the album artwork and package design to look like a vintage 70’s movie poster.
